Presented by:
Marianne Rollins, CIA - Audit Manager, Ochsner Health
Webinar Description:
Our goal is to provide information on how to foster a safe and meaningful health care experience for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and Heard of Hearing (HOH) patients. We will outline the risks, federal requirements, and present an audit program on how to conduct a review of language services. Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires all organizations receiving federal financial assistance (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) to offer and provide access to qualified medical interpreter services. Due to communication barriers, individuals with LEP and HOH are less likely to have routine health visits, more likely to defer needed health care, and more likely to leave the hospital against medical advice.
Learning Objectives:
Following this discussion, participants will be able to:
- Discuss Federal law that requires healthcare organizations to provide language access to both Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and Hard of Hearing (HOH) patients.
- Identify the importance of providing a Qualified Medical Interpreter to all interactions with LEP and HOH patients and the risks associated with not having them.
- Describe the controls which should be put in place in order to be compliant.
- Discuss how to conduct their own review of language services processes and compliance.
