Session Description:

Our organizations have always faced risks associated with vendors.  However, as a general trend more systems and services in healthcare are being transferred to third parties that traditionally were “behind the firewall.”  Internal Audit functions typically have a unique vantage point to assist their organizations to adapt to this changing risk landscape.  During this panel discussion, we’ll be discussing technical and non-technical risk assessment approaches as well as potential controls that assist in addressing these risks in third-party IT and Healthcare Operational systems and services.  The panel is also looking forward to interacting with the members of the AHIA community as we all share our collective experiences as we work together to address vendor risk.  We invite you to submit comments, questions, and suggested areas of discussion both ahead of and during this Tech Talk session.

Learning Objectives:
Following this discussion, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe various types of vendors (third-parties) and typical services they may offer – and what risks those pose.
  2. Discuss approaches that can be practically applied to assess vendor risk to healthcare environments, including a risk assessment process with vendor assurance reports as its foundation.
  3. Using a realistic scenario, webinar and panelist will collectively brainstorm to create an initial approach to assessing areas of risk that a hypothetical vendor brings an example organization.
